This presentation will review lumbar spine surgical procedures and the evidence supporting and questioning common lumbar surgical procedures in an environment where the popular news media questions the value of such interventions. The discussion will include a personal experience of the indications for such interventions, and an overview of the challenges of interpretation of the literature and integration of the literature into the clinical environment. It will also include discussion around ideal and non-ideal indications for surgery, and the drivers of intervention.
